LONDON (AP) — Around 3,000 workers at Britain’s biggest steelworks face the prospect of losing their jobs as part of a government-backed package Friday to make the plant “greener.”In an announcement, the British government confirmed widespread speculation that it is to pump up to 500 million pounds ($620 million) into the Port Talbot steelworks in south Wales. BRUSSELS (AP) — A series of school arsons in Belgium believed to be connected to a controversial school program in some parts of the country is prompting authorities to strengthen their police response.Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden on Friday called for a halt to the attacks in the French-speaking Wallonia region hours after another school was set on fire, the sixth in the Charleroi area since the start of the week. “We don’t touch our schools,” the minister wrote on the X social network, formerly known as Twitter. “Arson attacks in Brussels and Wallonia must stop. Russia raises key interest rate again as inflation and exchange rate worries continue

MOSCOW (AP) — The Central Bank of Russia raised its key lending rate by one percentage point to 13% on Friday, a month after imposing an even larger hike, as concerns about inflation persist and the ruble continues to struggle against the dollar. The increase comes as annualized inflation rose in September to 5.5% and the bank said it expected it would reach 6%-7% by the end of the year.“Inflationary pressure in the Russian economy remains high. Significant pro-inflationary risks have crystallized, namely the domestic demand growth outpacing the output expansion capacity and the depreciation of the ruble in the summer months,” the bank’s board said in a statement. “Therefore, it is required to additionally tighten monetary conditions.”The bank in August increased the lending rate to 12% — a jump of 3.5 percentage points — as the ruble fell to 100 against the dollar. Migrants move into Greek Town Hostel Friday

CHICAGO -- Asylum seekers will move into the Chicago Parthenon Hostel in Greek Town Friday -- the second time the hostel has been used to shelter migrants. Around 200 people are expected to make their way to the temporary housing located on South Halsted near Jackson.Alderman Bill Conway said there were no problems the last time the hostel was used as a shelter in the fall of 2022 when migrants were first sent to Chicago from Texas. Workers are on strike at all 3 Detroit auto makers for the first time in their union’s history The city has been trying to find more places to house the more than 13,000 asylum seekers which 2,000 of are spread out over several police stations. Migrants have been reportedly seen sleeping on floors and hundreds more have been staying at O'Hare. There are currently more than 15 city-run shelters.Conway says they had about a week heads up but however the initial move in date was pushed back until Friday morning.

This follows an incredibly successful run for "Hamilton" at the CIBC Theatre from September 2016 through January 2020.
