Southeast DC landlord to pay $2M for endangering tenants

The owners and manager of subsidized apartment complexes in Ward 8 will pay $2 million in penalties and restitution, including rent credits, for breaking D.C. law and endangering hundreds of tenants.Residents in the Atlantic Terrace and Southern Hills apartment complexes in Southeast were faced with “rodent and bug infestations, leaks and water damage, broken plumbing fixtures, broken and insecure doors and windows, missing smoke detectors, chipping and peeling lead-based paint, structural issues, and numerous other problems at the properties,” according to D.C.’s Office of the Attorney General.D.C.’s OAG said it launched an investigation in November 2021, after receiving reports of substandard housing conditions at the properties.“Every DC tenant has the right to live in safe and healthy conditions, and this right is especially critical as affordable housing in the District becomes increasingly scarce,” D.C. NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Mets’ series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night was postponed because of persistent rain.The game was rescheduled as part of a doubleheader Saturday starting at 4:10 p.m.New York postponed Friday’s game about eight hours before the scheduled 7:10 p.m. start.The Mets’ game against Miami on Thursday night was suspended because of rain at 12:58 a.m. with the Marlins leading 2-1 in the top of the ninth inning. Miami had scored twice in the ninth when play was halted with two on and two outs. After a 3-hour, 17-minute wait, the game was suspended. Disney Plus announces crackdown on password sharing in Canada

NEW YORK (AP) — Password-sharing crackdowns are becoming more and more common in the streaming world today. And Disney Plus is following suit.In an email sent to the users in Canada earlier this week, Disney announced restrictions on Canadian subscribers’ “ability to share your account or login credentials outside of your household.”Disney Plus’ updated Canadian Subscriber Agreement says users cannot share a subscription outside their household unless permitted by their account tier — noting that violations could lead to Disney Plus limiting or terminating service. “Household” covers the collection of devices associated with a subscriber’s primary residence and used by the individuals who live there, per the streamer’s help center.These password-sharing restrictions are part of multiple updates to Disney Plus’ Subscriber Agreement set to go into effect for most Canadian users Nov. 1. LAS VEGAS (AP) — A former fugitive from Colorado who pleaded guilty to causing a spectacular Las Vegas Strip hotel standoff that included furniture flying from a Caesars Palace window was sentenced Thursday to pay nearly $55,300 in restitution to the hotel and to serve up to four years of prison time.Matthew John Ermond Mannix, 36, of Golden, Colorado, stood in shackles and apologized for his actions, blaming a mental health crisis and a relapse into severe drug and alcohol abuse after 20 years of addiction.“I wasn’t in my right mind,” he said.His attorney, David Roger, listed more than 10 illegal drugs and several prescription medications that he said Mannix has taken in the past, and said Mannix is now being treated in custody with drugs that treat bipolar disorders and schizophrenia. 1 hospitalized after police-involved shooting in NW Miami-Dade

One person was hospitalized after an officer fired their weapon.Miami-Dade Police and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived at the scene at 310 NW 95th St., Friday afternoon. 7Skyforce hovered over the scene where the shooting took place near an industrial area. According to MDFR, one adult was transported to the hospital as a trauma alert. 7News camera captured one person on a gurney as they arrived at Jackson Memorial Hospital with officers.
