CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — South Africa has culled about 7.5 million chickens in an effort to contain dozens of outbreaks of two separate strains of avian influenza that threaten to create a shortage of eggs and poultry for consumers, the government and national poultry association said Tuesday.At least 205,000 chickens have died from bird flu in at least 60 separate outbreaks across the country, with more than half of those outbreaks in Gauteng province, which includes the country’s biggest city, Johannesburg, and the capital, Pretoria.Some grocery stores in Johannesburg were limiting the number of eggs customers were allowed to buy this week — in some cases to one carton of six eggs — and the government acknowledged there were “supply constraints.”The government announced approximately 2.5 million chickens bred for their meat had been culled. Man arrested for alleged impaired operation of boat in Port Perry

A 29-year-old male has been arrested for alleged assault and impaired operation of a boat after an incident in Port Perry.On Sept. 30 at approximately 11:40 a.m., members of Durham police responded to an unknown trouble call in the area of Regional Road 21 and Highway 12 in Port Perry.A male was reportedly assaulting a female on the side of the road, and when police located the female and she was treated for minor injuries on scene.The male suspect fled prior to police arriving and was last seen at the Port Perry Marina.Durham police’s Marine Unit was called in and located the male operating a boat on Lake Scugog. The male was arrested without incident and his boat was towed back to the marina.A 29-year-old man of Toronto is charged with assault and failure/refusal to comply with breath demand. He was released on an undertaking.

Insurance regulator takes action against life insurance sales practices

TORONTO — Ontario’s insurance regulator says it has taken enforcement action after finding widespread deficiencies related to the sale of life insurance products.The Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario says it looked into the conduct of life insurance agents at companies that use a multi-level marketing model for recruitment and found “unacceptable” levels of non-compliance.The agency’s review of 130 agents found 50 per cent had practices that went against the Insurance Act, including failing to disclose conflicts of interest, misrepresentation to the regulator and gaps in training.FSRA says two agents surrendered their license after being told they were under review, while the agency took action against 65 agents. Georgia high school football player dies after falling ill on sidelines, district says

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A high school football player died after suffering a “medical emergency” on the sidelines of a game in Georgia, the school district said. The junior varsity team from Windsor Forest High School was playing Monday night when on-site emergency responders rushed to help one of its players, the Savannah-Chatham County school district said in a news release. It said the player was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital, but gave no further details about what happened. The name of the player was not released.
