Airbnb agrees to pay $621 million to settle a tax dispute in Italy

ROME (AP) — Short-term rental platform Airbnb has agreed to pay 576 million euros ($621 million) to settle a years-long dispute over unpaid taxes in Italy but said it won’t try to recover the money from its hosts.In November, Italian prosecutors said AirBnb owed about 779 million euros ($840 million) in short-term rental taxes it had failed to pay on behalf of Italian landlords who used the platform between 2017 and 2021.The San Francisco-based company said in a statement on Wednesday that it was working on introducing new tools for hosts to have their taxes withheld automatically and paid to the Italian tax authorities on their behalf.“The vast majority of hosts on Airbnb in Italy are ordinary families that are using the platform for supplemental income,” the company said in its statement. “We hope the agreement with the Italian Revenue Agency and recent legislative changes will provide these families with certainty about the rules around hosting for years to come.”The Court of Jus...

Body found in trunk of burning vehicle on South Side

CHICAGO — A body has been found in the trunk of a vehicle in the Bridgeport neighborhood on the city's South Side.Police said officers and the Chicago Fire Department responded to a car on fire in an alley on the 3700 block of South Parnell around 2:08 a.m. Friday. Firefighters extinguished the fire and discovered a victim unresponsive in the trunk. The person was pronounced dead on scene. Manor Police arrest suspect, identify victim in Walmart parking lot shooting

MANOR, Texas (KXAN) -- The Manor Police Department has identified and arrested the suspect allegedly involved in the shooting and killing of a man in the Walmart parking lot. Police also identified the victim. Police responded just before 4 a.m. to the Walmart located at 11923 US 290 for a report of a person being shot in the parking lot. When they arrived, they found a man with apparent gunshot wounds and began life-saving measures. AUSTIN (KXAN) -- The acting Deputy Chief of Operations at Austin's airport, Loren Lintner, said he expects a new safety control program to be operating by the end of February. Lintner presented new details about the ramp control program during an Airport Advisory Committee meeting this week. There he said the airport's ramp has become chaotic as traffic continues to increase. "If you got two aircraft trying to push back from adjacent gates, there's no mechanism to de-conflict those aircraft either," Lintner said. Where is the ramp?The "ramp" is the area where planes board and de-board. COLLINSVILLE, Ill. - Law enforcement agencies across Illinois are starting campaigns on Friday targeting impaired drivers.IDOT is in charge of the holiday enforcement campaign. The goal is to keep roadways like Interstate 55 and Interstate 70 safe during this holiday season.From Friday through January 2, law enforcement across Illinois is teaming up with IDOT to show zero tolerance for alcohol and drug-impaired driving. LOUIS - St. Louis judges want to hire their own bailiffs because of staffing problems in the St. Louis Sheriff's Department.FOX 2's partners at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Sheriff Vernon Betts admits his department is understaffed, but he calls the move an attempt by judges to take over the sheriff's department.
