At least 128 dead as strong quake rocks northwestern Nepal, and officials say toll expected to rise

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Helicopters and ground troops rushed to help people hurt in a strong earthquake that shook northwestern Nepal districts just before midnight Friday, killing at least 128 people and injuring dozens dozens more, officials said Saturday.Authorities said the death toll was expected to rise, noting that communications were cut off with many places.As day broke, rescue helicopters flew into the region to help out and security forces on the ground were digging out the injured and dead from the rubble, Nepal police spokesman Kuber Kadayat said. Troops were also clearing roads and mountain trails that were blocked by landslides triggered by the earthquake. That’s all Brad Hoopes of Loveland needs to document the life stories of Colorado veterans.For two decades, Hoopes has been preserving the stories of local heroes and donating the recordings to the Library of Congress as part of its Veterans History Project.“I thought, well, why not try to do something on the local level to feed the program? DENVER (KDVR) -- In celebration of National Adoption Day, 27 Denver children officially joined their forever families Friday.Denver Human Services and Denver Juvenile Court hosted the event for the 18th time this year at the Lindsey-Flanigan Courthouse. Meet Ru, Castle Rock Middle School’s new therapy dog National Adoption Day, which falls on Nov. 18 this year, is a collective effort that aims to bring awareness to the over 113,000 children in foster care in the U.S., according to the website. Each year, courts and organizations in over 400 communities nationwide work to finalize and celebrate adoptions from foster care, just in time for Thanksgiving.Since Denver joined the effort, 831 local children have been adopted.
