Between Father’s Day and the Juneteenth holiday, it has been an extremely busy weekend at Captain White’s Seafood, an iconic business in the D.C. region that is now located in Oxon Hill, Maryland.The business moved to Maryland last year, after being at D.C.’s Southwest Waterfront for about 50 years.Sonny White, who owns the company, said he was pleased to see that the new location was thriving over the holiday weekend.“After 50 years of good service and good crabs, we have a lot of customers,” said White.It was so busy Monday that White had to call in extra employees to help out.Dozens of people were in a line that stretched around the business, and when the line would shrink, more customers would pull into the parking lot.“This is the first time we’ve been open on Juneteenth,” said White. “We weren’t really expecting it to be as strong as it is.”Local customer Steven Benson was there Monday.“When I came and looked I was li...

(KDVR) -- Mike Amdur is a firefighter at the Foothills Fire Protection District around Lookout Mountain.He said the grasses in the area are green and several feet high after all of the recent rain."There's good moisture content right now, but we worry when those grasses dry out, they create a very large, heavy fuel load for us and can generate pretty intense and fast-growing fire behavior," he said.Amdur said grasses dry out much faster than trees and it doesn't take long.According to Zach Hiris, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Boulder, the rest of June looks to be pretty dry."For places like the plains where it is predominantly grass, it just takes a couple of weeks of really dry conditions to get those fuels available to burn again," Hiris said. A Florida deputy was hailed a “hero” after performing CPR on an unconscious truck driver in Orlando.“Keep breathin’, keep breathin’, keep breathin’, man. C’mon, stay with me.”Volusia County Sergeant Brian Walsh saw a driver run his truck off Interstate-95, into a guard rail.Walsh pulled over and extracted the unconscious driver out and immediately began CPR, until paramedics arrived.The driver was transported to a nearby hospital where he was breathing on his own and receiving treatment.

A man was transported to the hospital after possibly being struck by lightning at a park in Fort Lauderdale while attending the Juneteenth event.Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to a call reporting a possible lightning strike involving an adult male at Mills Pond Park, located at 2201 NW 9th Ave, shortly after 3:40 p.m.Ujima Men’s Collective organized a cooking contest for the Juneteenth celebration where 100 people came to celebrate. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Tropical Storm Bret formed in the central Atlantic Ocean on Monday, with forecasters saying it could pose a hurricane threat to the eastern Caribbean by Thursday and the Dominican Republic and Haiti by the weekend.The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Bret had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph) at 5 p.m. Monday as it moved west across the Atlantic at 21 mph (33 kph). Forecasters expect it to strengthen over the next two days, reaching Category 1 hurricane strength of 74 mph (120 kph) by Wednesday night as it nears the Lesser Antilles. Emerson College is hosting a special exhibit that chronicles and commemorates the players who broke baseball’s color barrier, including Jackie Robinson and Pumpsie Green.“Barrier Breakers: From Jackie to Pumpsie” officially opened Monday morning on Juneteenth, at 118 Boylston Street in Boston.The free exhibit, which runs through Friday, Aug. 4, features the stories of players who joined Major League Baseball and broke its color barrier over the span of 12 years, ranging from 1947 with Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers to Elijah “Pumpsie” Green, who joined the Boston Red Sox in 1959 and is credited with completing the integration cycle.The event is a a traveling exhibit made possible by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City and is being presented as part of a partnership between Emerson, the City of Boston, the Boston Public Library, Red Sox, and numerous other community partners.“Awareness – and when I see a kid with their parent say &...
