Miners from a rival union hold hundreds of colleagues underground at a gold mine in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A group of miners from an unregistered, rival union are holding around 500 of their colleagues underground for the second day at a gold mine in South Africa over a union dispute. Some 15 miners have been injured in scuffles, the head of the mine said on Tuesday.Details were sketchy and there were conflicting statements about what happened.According to Jon Hericourt, CEO of New Kleynfontein Gold Mine company, which manages the mine, the incident erupted early on Monday when the miners from the unregistered union prevented hundreds of others from leaving after their night shift ended at the Modder East mine in Springs, east of Johannesburg. He said he did not know exactly how many of the miners were being “held hostage” by others from the rival union. Teck Resources raises cost estimates for QB2 project in Chile

VANCOUVER — Teck Resources Ltd. raised the cost estimates for its QB2 copper project in Chile as it reported its latest quarterly results and lowered its production guidance for copper, molybdenum and steelmaking coal for the year.The mining company says it now expects the QB2 project to cost between US$8.6 billion and $8.8 billion, up from earlier guidance for between US$8.0 billion and US$8.2 billion.The update came as Teck says it earned a profit attributable to shareholders of C$276 million or 52 cents per diluted share for the quarter end Sept. 30 compared with a loss of C$195 million or 37 cents per share a year earlier.Revenue totalled C$3.60 billion, down from C$4.26 billion in the same quarter last year.On an adjusted basis, Teck says it earned 76 cents per diluted share, down from an adjusted profit of C$1.74 per diluted share a year earlier.In its guidance, Teck lowered its annual copper production forecast to 320,000 to 365,000 tonnes from 330,000 to 375,000 tonnes for t...

SIU investigating fatal police shooting in St. Catharines

Ontario’s police watchdog has been called in to investigate a fatal shooting in St. Catharines involving officers with the Niagara Regional Police Service.Police were called to a home on Melody Trail near Arthur Street around 9 p.m. Monday.Authorities say there was an interaction between uniformed patrol officers and a male suspect that ended with the man being shot by police.Police say lifesaving measures were performed by paramedics, but the man died of his injuries.The Special Investigations Unit has been notified and have invoked their mandate.The SIU is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to please contact them.
