David Bergen, Sarah Bernstein and Kathryn Kuitenbrouwer are among the authors on the long list for this year’s Scotiabank Giller Prize. Last year’s winner, Suzette Mayr, revealed the list in St. John’s, N.L., at an event that kicked off the 30th anniversary of the Canadian literary prize.Bergen, who won the 2005 Scotiabank Giller Prize for his novel “The Time In Between,” made the 2023 long list with “Away from the Dead,” published by Goose Lane Editions.Bernstein received a nod for her second novel “Study for Obedience,” published by Knopf Canada, which also made the long list for the prestigious Booker Prize earlier this summer. Also on the list is Kuitenbrouwer’s “Wait Softly Brother,” a novel published by Wolsak & Wynn that has been described as autobiographical fiction.Organizers say the 12 titles were chosen from a record number of 145 book submissions made by publishers across Canada and the short list for the prize will be announced on Oct. 11.The Scotiabank Giller Prize...

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — An extratropical cyclone in southern Brazil caused floods in several cities, killing at least 27 people and leaving more than 1,600 homeless, authorities said Wednesday.More than 60 cities have been battered by the storm since Monday night, and Rio Grande do Sul Gov. Eduardo Leite said the death toll was the state’s highest due to a climate event.Rescue efforts expanded farther west on Wednesday with helicopters headed to the Rio Pardo Valley. UK government accused of ‘cutting corners’ as 147 schools named at risk due to crumbling concrete

LONDON (AP) — The British government has been accused of “cutting corners” as it published Wednesday a list of 147 schools in England that are potentially at risk of collapse from crumbling concrete.The list from the Department for Education, which oversees schools in England, shows that 19 schools have had to delay the start of the new academic year because of the concrete crisis and that students at 24 others will receive some remote learning, with four having switched to fully remote learning at the weekend. Other educational establishments could be added to the list over the coming days or weeks. Police: Motorcyclist weaving in traffic crashes, dies in suburbs

LAKE COUNTY, Ill. — A motorcyclist died Tuesday night in the northern suburbs after police said he was weaving in and out of traffic.At around 5 p.m., Lake County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to Route 21, south of Casey Road, in unincorporated Libertyville, for a crash involving a motorcycle.Police found the motorcyclist, a 49-year-old man from Lake Villa, suffering from critical injuries at the scene.According to a preliminary investigation, the man was traveling at a high-rate of speed weaving in and out of traffic prior to colliding with a Hyundai SUV on Route 21. CHICAGO — As more migrants continue getting sent to Chicago from Texas, city leaders are looking to find more shelters for them to live.On Wednesday, 34th Ward Ald. Bill Conway plans to hold a meeting discussing the city's plans to open migrant shelter at the Chicago Parthenon Guest House, located at 310 South Halsted Street, in Greektown.Just last week, the city opened the Lake Shore Hotel in Kenwood for migrants to live.These are just two options of housing for asylum seekers being bussed from Texas.Last week was the anniversary of when the first group arrived from the border. Since then, more than 13,000 migrants have been brought to Chicago. Hundreds of asylum seekers temporarily living at O’Hare International Airport Migrants have found shelter living in and around police stations and recently at O'Hare International Airport.Ald. Conway's meeting Wednesday will be open to the public to voice their concerns about the new shelter coming to the Greektown neighborhood.
