Editor’s note: The above video shows KXAN Live’s top morning headlines for Friday, Oct. 27, 2023.AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man was arrested in connection with a September homicide investigation where a woman’s body was set on fire in northwest Austin, according to a Travis County affidavit.The affidavit said Andrew Alexander Cole, 45, faced a charge of tampering or fabricating physical evidence with the intent to impair—a second-degree felony. Cole remained booked into the Travis County jail Friday on a bond of more than $100,000, according to jail records.KXAN has begun looking into attorney information for Cole. If an attorney is found and a statement is received, this story will be updated.Investigators believed Cole was with Davis for her death and then tampered with evidence when he “removed the victim from his hotel room, drove the victim to a neighborhood, placed the victim on the side of the road and lit her on fire,” according to the affidavit. PREVIOUS: Texas auto dealer exec Erik Charles Maund indicted in murder-for-hire of Nashville couple Erik Charles Maund, 48, a former partner with the Austin-area Maund Automotive Group, faces felony charges of murder for hire, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and kidnapping resulting in death. Co-defendants Bryon Brockway, 48, of Austin, and Adam Carey, 32, of Richlands, North Carolina, both face the same charges as Maund. The FBI identified both men as former active-duty members of the U.S. Marine Corps; Brockway served in the Force Recon unit and Carey in the Special Operations Group.A fourth defendant, Gilad Peled, entered a plea deal in December 2022, which, according to online records, the court accepted. (NEWS10) — This week on Empire State Weekly, multiple lawmakers as well as EMS providers are calling on Governor Hochul to sign legislation that would change the way ambulance services are paid for. Assemblyman Phil Steck, (representing District 110) and Jay Tyler, the Director of Guilderland EMS, explained the Direct Pay Bill passed both houses in the legislature earlier this year. Lincoln County prosecutor pushes to bring Pam Hupp trial closer to St. Louis area

LINCOLN COUNTY, Mo. - Prosecutors want the high-profile Pam Hupp murder trial moved back closer to the St. Louis area.The Lincoln County Prosecutor’s Office has just announced their plans to ask a judge for the move. It comes after a defense request for a change of venue sent the trial more than 200 miles away to the Springfield, Missouri, area.Lincoln County Prosecutor Mike Wood wrote in a news release, “I agree that a change of venue from Lincoln County – the scene of the crimes – is still appropriate. However, as my office has continued its in-depth planning to conduct what we estimate will be a month-long trial, it is more and more apparent that the physical distance between the scene of the crimes and green county will cause cumbersome and inefficient delivery of justice.”  Pam Hupp is currently serving a life sentence for the 2016 murder of Louis Gumpenberger. Missouri schools to test drinking water for lead

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - This school year, school districts all around the state of Missouri are testing for lead in drinking water in compliance with a new law. Before Jan. 1, all schools are required to create a testing plan. Then, under law, schools have until next August to test all drinking water for lead. With Missouri being a leading lead-producing state, there are concerns about what the results will show. "There's no known safe level of lead in the body," said Melissa May, health drinking water unit chief in the bureau of epidemiology at the Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS). "We are doing our best to help schools reduce lead in drinking water because we do know the adverse health effects of lead in our drinking water, and we are committed to keeping our children safe in Missouri." Riverside County man arrested in million-dollar luxury car theft scheme

A man from Riverside County has been arrested and charged with 18 felonies in connection with a theft scheme involving multiple luxury cars. According to a release from the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office, owners of several high-end vehicles contacted the Riverside Auto-Theft Interdiction Detail (RAID) after they were unable to report their cars as stolen. Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, identified by authorities as Kendall Clark, 25, of Murrieta, would fill out paperwork and pay for a one-week rental from a car owner in Lake Mathews but would not return the vehicles.  U-Haul loaded with marijuana involved in car-to-car shooting “The cars were later located at dealerships around the country with titles that had been forged or ‘washed’ by Clark to indicate a change of ownership,” the DA’s office said. “The total value of the cars is more than $1 million.” The vehicles, which were all returned to their respective owners, included: A 2022 Ch...
